A Celebration of Ben Franklin's Birthday, January 16th.
To celebrate Ben's Birthday, the fourth grade classes participated in an "in school field trip"! It was full of activities on topics that Ben enjoyed and was topped off by a visit from Ben himself!
Ben spoke to the classes about his life and answered questions from the students. Most of the students knew a lot about him because of the books they have read about him. Ben Franklin was portrayed by Ralph Archibald. He has been portraying Ben Franklin at many events since the Bicentennial.
Students participated in five different activities related to Ben's interests: Printing (we made birthday cards), Electricity (we learned about circuits and static electricity), Inventions (we worked in teams to design boats out of foil or towers out of straws), The Post Office (we designed stamps) and we saw the movie Ben & Me about a mouse who takes credit for all Ben's inventions.
At lunch time we all sang Happy Birthday to Mr. Franklin and shared a cake made by the cafeteria staff.
It was a busy and tiring day, filled with fun learning experiences. It was like a field trip, an in school field trip!
