This year we have initiated an after school chess club for students. First - fifth grade students have been meeting every other week to play chess! Our students have responded enthusiastically to the program, with 70 students participating regularly. It has been wonderful seeing our students so engaged and excited about playing chess. They are learning a lot about the game from the adults in the club and from each other. All the participants have improved their skills and seem to really enjoy playing. One wonderful part of the club is that both parents and staff are coming to play, and have found themselves in some challenging matches with our young chess players. Even our principal has learned that you can't win every time! We also have several parent volunteers that help with the organization of the club, and support the activity weekly. The chess club is another example of the strong partnership between staff and parents at Hillendale, and the benefits this collaboration provides for our students.
