Hillendale Art in Action

About the Program:  Art in Action is a PTO sponsored program designed to bring appreciation of art application into the Unionville-Chadds Ford schools.  The program is divided into two areas:

  • Students are introduced to famous art works and artists.  Each year artists and works from a specific time period are selected and students learn about the elements utilized by those artists through class room presentations made by parent volunteers.  The students also participate in creative activities designed to help them develop an appreciation of art.
  • Students also participate in a school-wide, hands-on art project. Every student in the school contributes to the project.

This year's focus is on Impressionism and the effects of light.  Each class was introduced to 15-17 famous paintings.  The children participated in discovering some of the elements of Impressionism, including:  how thick brush strokes bring a painting to life; painting in small vibrant dabs of color; emphasizing painting outdoors and catching the impressions of the moment; the effects of photography and cropping.  Each volunteer presented this information in a fun and interactive way.  Please be sure to see some of the samples of "OUR IMPRESSION OF IMPRESSIONISM"  in three of the showcases at school (located across from the library, in the 4th & 5th grade hallway, and next to the art room).  Look for the "action" photos of the children working with the parent volunteers in the showcases.
