"Aye, aye, sir!" responded the eager crew.
"Heave around then," captain ordered.
Thus began the fourth grade adventure on the Kalmar Nyckel, the ship which brought Swedish settlers to what is now Delaware. Students learned first hand what those early settlers must have experienced on board. Sleeping on the open deck for weeks at a time on the open sea in winter, having no fresh food, cooking fires or running water, and being on the lookout for pirates must have made their lives interesting! The ship is a replica, built on-site using techniques from the 1600's. Touring the blacksmith shop, students saw methods used to make metal tools and parts. They learned the importance of pulleys by lifting heavy buckets, and they had a tug of war with the captain, who taught them the advantage of the ship's capstan.
This trip into the past made us appreciate the hardships of those who built our nation. We surely appreciate our modern conveniences!
