Hillendale Elementary School had a Memorial Day Observance on Friday May 26, 2000 at 9:00am. The program directed by Mr. Silknitter included:
- Presentation of Colors by CO, F, 97th PA Volunteer Infantry, Bradbury Camp #149, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
- Reading of the Gettysburg Address by Chris Weidman.
- Memorial Day Message by Mr. B. Wenrich, Retired Chief Petty Officer and Commander of Brookhaven Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
- Reading of Presidential Proclamation - Mr. Steve McClaskey, Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board.
- A wonderful selection of Patriotic Music by the talented musicians of Hillendale under the direction of Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Jennings and Mr. Means.
Some thoughts about the program from Hillendale students:
"I think that the Memorial Day Observance was really nice because it tells us kids what the real meaning of Memorial Day means, not just a day off from school. Memorial day is when we remember and honor the veterans who died for our country".
Pramiti S."When I heard the rifle salute it reminded me how hard everyone has worked to help our nation grow into a powerful country."
John P."I think that it is great that Mr. Silknitter is so thoughtful and thankful for all those who have fought and died to make our country what it is today."
Tara H."It was a very good program. I think all the kids have a different understanding of Memorial Day."
