The theme for this year's Red Ribbon Week was "Healthy Minds are Drug Free." All students received a silhouette on which they put activities they did or choices they made to keep their mind healthy. These were used to decorate the large banner in the front hall or their classrooms.
Other activities for the week included a door decorating contest with a message that promoted a drug free lifestyle. Mrs. Bowman's and Miss Borel's classes won, but choosing the winners was very difficult. There were many excellent, clever themes.
Tuesday all students were encouraged to wear their sneakers to promote: "Don't Let Drugs Sneak up on You", followed by wearing your sweats day to promote: "Living Drug Free is No Sweat", and a wearing Red Day to make a statement against illegal drug use.
For the second year in a row, Mr. H.G.Haskell donated pumpkins for all students to decorate in a drug theme. Decorated pumpkins lined the hallways during the Halloween parade.
Students were given a math trivia question to challenge them academically. They found the answers to be shocking when they realized how much money was wasted in buying cigarettes over a period of years.
The highlight of the week was the assembly by Mr. Jim Moore, a pathology assistant from Reading hospital. He displayed many normal and diseased body parts and organs and talked about the consequences of an unhealthy life style. As a follow up all students received a "Say Boo to Drugs" trick or treat bag filled with safety and health related messages covered during the assembly. Hopefully students will review these pamphlets with their parents.
