PILOT WHALE

by Nicole

Did you know the pilot whale got its name from the pods they travel in? They have a leader or pilot to these pods. In their pods, up to 100 whales travel together!! The pilot whales' pilot leads the pod to food or even trouble like shoals or shallow waters. The pilot whales are known for getting trapped in too close to the shore and dying along the coasts.

They are hunted for the oil in their heads! They eat small fish, squid, and cuttlefish. The pilot whale is a toothed whale, but surprisingly gentle! They travel in the warm coastal waters along the coasts of California and in Mexico also. They are up to 20 feet long and weigh up to 12 tons!!

If you want to be a leader, vote for one - the pilot whale!!
