SPERM WHALE
by Jamie and Julie

VOTE FOR SPUD! Did you know that the sperm whales are known as the world's greatest divers? They can dive more than 3,000 feet! The males can weigh up to 48 tons, whereas the female is only about 12 tons.
You can recognize a sperm whale from its box-like head and massive teeth. The sperm whales' spout can reach as far as a ship's mast. Its brain is six times as large as ours. It has a total of one foot of blubber.
The female sperm whales live in groups with their calves. Males spend only a few hours a year with their group.
The females and their calves live in tropic waters around the equator. The males live up in the arctic near the cooler waters. You can find them in every ocean.
The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale. They only have teeth on the bottom, and each tooth weighs about 1/2 pound. They can get as big as 70 feet and they eat squid. Their enemies are men who hunt them for oil.
So don't be a dud, vote for spud!
