Hillendale Elementary School

Embracing The Environment

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

Hillendale Elementary School (HES) is committed to environmental preservation and education. Beginning in the summer of 2013, HES upgraded our stormwater management system. Since then, Hillendale has also established an outdoor classroom, native plant meadow and woodland/forest path, erected educational signage, and constructed a trail that links all of these elements together.

In 2023, the U.S.Department of Education recognized us as a Green Ribbon School. The Green Ribbon Award is an honor for schools, districts, and higher education institutions for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education.

HES is grateful for the generous funding we have received from the E. Kneale Dockstader Foundation and Hillendale Elementary School PTO and for the guidance of our community partners, the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance, Brinton Run Preserve, Longwood Gardens, Mt. Cuba Center, and Stroud Water Research Center.

“The front lines of the battle for nature are not in the Amazon rain forest or the Alaskan wilderness; the front lines are our backyards, medians, parking lots, and elementary schools. The ecological warriors of the future won’t just be scientists and engineers, but gardeners, horticulturists, land managers, landscape architects, transportation department staff, elementary school teachers, and community association board members.” – Planting for a Post-Wild World by Claudia West and Thomas Ranier
